Film & TV Locations on the Yorkshire Coast
28/03/2013
The Yorkshire Coast has featured as a location in many TV shows and even the occasional Hollywood blockbuster. Why not visit these sites on your holiday at Crows Nest.
The North York Moors National Park, and the quaint village of Goathland in particular is famous as being Aidensfield. The village where the ITV police drama Heartbeat was filmed. First aired in 1992, the show went on to film 372 episodes before PC Nick Rowan and the gang hung up his truncheon in 2010.
A spin off to Heartbeat was filmed in Scarborough, The Royal followed the local hospital in the 1960s which served both the local farmers and townsfolk and visiting holidaymakers
For the younger generation Goathland Station featured in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone as Hogsmeade Station. In the film, Harry Potter and the rest of the students arrive at Kings Cross Station in London, to board the train to take them to "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry". They run through the wall to Platform 9¾ which takes them onto an old steam train, which eventually arrives at "Hogsmeade" station (which is actually Goathland station). The final scene in the film shows the train leaving Hogsmeade station, and thanks to special effects, has Hogwarts castle in the background.
Another local attraction to feature in Hollywood is Castle Howard which was the backdrop in the 1981 TV series and the 2008 film version of Brideshead Revisited.
Further up the coast in the village of Staithes, you will find Old Jack and his trusty sidekick Salty Dog. They are the stars of the recent CBeebies programme Old Jacks Boat. In which Old Jack tells nautical stories aboard his boat The Rainbow, before setting off back to Staithes.
Scarborough has got in on the action (action.... get it??) in the 1998 film Little Voice starring big names such as Michael Caine, Ewan McGregor, Brenda Blethyn and the star of the film Jane Horrocks. The film was set in Cayton Bay, only 1 mile from Crows Nest Caravan Park, where during the day she is a timid recluse, but in the evening she overcomes this to perform on stage.
