Surf the Waves in Scarborough
Cayton Bay near Scarborough is world famous for its excellent surfing conditions and has plenty of fun for everyone from professionals to beginners. There are mellow waves in the middle of the bay which are perfect for beginners and in the Bunkers area of the bay, you can find world class A frame peaks for those who know what they are doing. If you want get some lessons, head to Scarborough Surf School. They provide lessons all year round (depending on weather conditions) and you can get beginners tuition or advanced technique sessions depending on your level. So what are you waiting for? Jump into your wetsuit and head into the surf!
Cycle the Cinder Track
There are lots of great cycle routes for you to explore in North Yorkshire, but one of the best is the Whitby/Scarborough coastal Cinder track. This is a 21.5 mile long (34.4 km) former railway line, that now offers stunning views across the coast and inland landscape. There are plenty of quiet bays to explore along the route, such as Crook Ness and Cloughton Wyke. You can even stop for a pint or an afternoon tea! If you are not travelling with your own bike, you can hire then at either end of the route. At the northern end near Whitby you find Trailways and at the southern end Betta Motoring in Scarborough. Challenge yourself on your trip and see how far you can get!
Take to the Trees at Go Ape
Get your adrenaline pumping and ascend into the canopy at Go Ape in Dalby Forest! A series of canopy crossings have been built amongst the tree tops and it is your challenge to make it across the various lines, ropes and swings to reach the other side and the way down. Leave your comfort zone and take the plunge (don’t worry you will be secured in a harness)! This is a fantastic adventure for adults and children alike and if you want more adventure, you can also try the forest Segway trails. Go Ape offers fun and a bit of terror…for all the family and will certainly leave you with some unique memories of your trip.
Can you find the hidden geocache?
If you were always a fan of epic quests for buried treasure, then geocaching is the real life treasure hunt for you! Grab a GPS device, an Ordinance Survey map and a compass and head out into the North York Moors. So how does it work? You download the geocache map and use your orienteering skills to track down the hidden cache. When (or if…) you find them you are free to take one of the prizes left there by someone else, but make sure to leave something in return for the next treasure hunter! Some geocaches can be really difficult to find, making this activity a fun and rewarding challenge. If you don’t want to invest in a GPS device, there are geocaching events run by North York Moors National Park together with the National Trust and the Cleveland Way National Trail.
Explore from a different vantage point
Horse riding in North Yorkshire gives you the opportunity to explore its spectacular nature from a different vantage point. Escape from the modern world on one of the region’s many bridleways and get close to nature! There are many routes to explore including the Cinder Track, the beautiful beaches of Filey, Saltburn and Sandsend, tracks across the North York Moors and the Dalby Forest tracks. If it is something you have not tried before, then you can also get riding lessons and tours with Snainton Riding Centre near Scarborough. Be at one with nature and take to the saddle in North Yorkshire.
