Making Memories at Thornton le Dale Show
2/08/2023
With so many attractions and events in our local area, its impossible to see and do everything in one holiday. Here is a family favourite we think you'll enjoy:
One of the things I remember about growing up is visiting Thornton le Dale Show. Watching the cattle proudly being walked around the arena, visiting the sheep in their pens and looking over the rosettes they had won. Big balls of candy floss that we weren’t ever allowed and swing boats that we would try and get over the top of the bars. Above all else, the picnics we would eat whilst sat in the boot of the car.
Fast forward a few years and I would take my own children. They would marvel over the Duckdog trials – think Sheepdogs but with ducks, sit mouths aghast as they watched motorcycling stuntmen flying through the sky and would thoroughly enjoy watching ponies being ridden around the showground.
Thornton-le-Dale Show takes place on Wednesday, 9th August 2023. It’s still one of the most traditional village agricultural shows in the area. Locals gather to show off their crafts as well as their animals. On display will be many fine examples of local craft skills which may include wood turning, furniture making, handcrafted greetings cards, painting and dyeing, hand embroidered pictures, jewellery making, candle making, stained glass, fine art, handmade soap, patchwork and quilting etc.
Who will have made the best jams, baked the best Victoria sponges, carved the best walking stick or grown the best dahlias?
The local agricultural shows are for all members of the family. It’s an opportunity to shop for unusual gifts, learn about the environment and where our food comes from and enjoy watching farmers showing off their hard work.
And, when you’ve finished walking around the show, head into the village of Thornton le Dale where you can paddle in the stream, enjoy an ice-cream from Balderson's and walk by the traditionally thatched cottage which you’ll see on all the postcards.
Enjoy making memories for your children……and theirs.
Other Agricultural Shows include:
6th August - Tockwith Show
